So he keeps his money out of escrow, but wouldn't the difference have to be made
up by other players?
If that's the case, I am pretty sure this isn't the end of it.

It's nice to have a owner who wants to win and will do whatever it takes.

That was a pretty dismal performance the past 2 years+ and hasn't had that much success on ice since he purchased the team, and while the prospects look very good that isn't a surefire way to

But having a almost historically bad season is nothing to be proud of or called "winning"

Every owner wants to win since all the extra $$$ and they like that ego boost it's just if they have pride or not to sink down and purposely tank rather than compete day in and day put even if they won't make the playoffs

The contract is no "cap circumvention". That's ludicrous, it adheres well within the current CBA guidelines as far as length of term and year to year money.

Where it's going to miss off NHL home office is the escrow avoiding it blatantly does. And, unfortunately for Bettman and the other 29 owners on the board of governors, there's nothing they can do about ROR's contract.

However, with that being said, expect an amendment to the CBA to be installed within this coming season with NHLPA approval. Both the NHLPA and NHL fully understand the importance of keeping the league itself financially shielded and the subsequent consequences of not doing so.

Having an owner like Mr. Pegula in the fold, who is not bottom line conscious has to be terrifying to even some of the major market club owners.

Take it to the bank.

He had to clean up the mess Darcey left. Sabres lost a lot of good players when the were very good cause of money. The team needed to be blown up and be built from scratch. No way Golisano does this type of contract.

The kovalchuk contract was within the cba parameters but was against the spirit of the cba

They closed that loophole supposedly but we shall see and nothing will come of it

Has the league approved this?
Have any members, who all pay out on escrow, questioned this contract?
Why should one player get all his money upfront, meaning he pays a much smaller amount to escrow than every other player?
If I'm any other player, I would have an issue over this.
This is almost, (comparison), like your neighbor not having to pay taxes, yet you still do, (am I understanding this correctly?)

And they chose to void the Kovalchuk contract, because of this.

They may do the same to this one, as its not just owners questioning it, players, whom are already locked in long term, as well.

A team that ranked 21st in revenue and has an operating income of 4.4 million has to pay a player 45.5 million dollars of a total contract that is value at 52.5 million.

Thanks for causing the next lockout.

It was already coming. This one contract isn't causing half the league to lose money, the current CBA is.

The league is already in the hole 45.5 million dollars from this. How are the sabres going to pay this with an operating income of 4.4 million?

Its called a rich owner and the league isn't healthy already and it most likely never will be.

The Peds didn't offer that contract. The Flyers forced their hand. Not really the same thing. While the contract is similar structured to ROR, the league gets to reclaim some of the escrow in years 2016-2022.

It'll be interesting to see if the league shuts this down quickly or if it becomes a regular demand from all free agents moving forward. I doubt we make it to the end of the current cba without another lockout. If this does become a regular demand for free agents I can see the players voting against the 5% escalator next year and the cap dropping.
